Malaga

St George's Church, Avenida de Pries 1, 29016 Malaga

St George’s Church, the oldest Anglican church in mainland Spain, is located in Malaga’s English Cemetery close to the centre of the city.  It is about 300m east of the Malaga bullring, where Paseo de Reding becomes Avenida de Pries.

The church building, originally the cemetery chapel and the dwelling for the caretaker, was built of sandstone in classical style in 1839-40.  With its fine Doric columns, this building was converted in 1890-91 to become the present St George’s Church.  (For the previous 50 years, even before the appointment of the first permanent chaplain in 1850, services had been held in a room in or adjacent to the British Consulate.)  Over the years all the other chaplaincies along the Costa del Sol, from Estepona to Nerja, grew out of St George’s.

We are a vibrant, multi-cultural congregation with members from Britain, the U.S., Nigeria, Canada, Spain and many other countries. We welcome many tourists to our services as Malaga grows in popularity as a tourist and cruise ship destination and our visitors often comment on the warmth of their welcome here.

Holy Communion (occasionally Morning Prayer) is celebrated every Sunday at 11.00 a.m, followed by refreshments and fellowship after the service
